Important: To help with your planning, we’ve shared the general guidelines typically followed by bus companies. However, these processes may vary depending on the company, as they have the discretion to allow or deny pet boarding. Please confirm directly with the bus company beforehand to ensure a smooth experience for both you and your furry friend!
Pets
In general, the ANTT (National Land Transport Agency) requires that dogs and cats have a Health Certificate for Transit, issued by a veterinarian registered in the animal’s state of origin. For longer trips, consult your vet to see if extra care is needed to keep your pet comfortable.
If your pet is over 90 days old, a rabies vaccination certificate is also required (the vaccine must have been administered more than 30 days and less than one year ago).
Some bus companies require pets to travel in the luggage compartment and generally do not charge extra fees for transportation.
Others allow pets to travel with you, under or between your legs, provided they are in carriers and do not inconvenience neighboring passengers.
For added comfort, you can reserve the seat next to you for your pet if the company allows pets in the cabin.
Guide Dogs
If you are visually impaired, you have the right to travel with your guide dog at no additional cost. The dog can remain between your legs during the trip, regardless of its weight. 🦮
Emotional Support Animals
Emotional support animals are allowed on buses. If you’re traveling with a support animal, follow these steps for a smooth trip:
- For dogs: A leash and collar are mandatory.
- Animal Documentation: Provide an updated vaccination card showing rabies and multiple vaccines, signed by a licensed veterinarian.
- Identification: Ensure the animal wears an identification tag on its neck.
- Tutor Documentation: Present an updated report from a psychiatrist confirming the need for the animal. The report should include details about both the owner and the pet.
Which animals can be emotional support animals?
The most common are dogs and cats, but any pet capable of providing comfort and emotional support can fulfill this role. 🐾
Wild Animals
For wild animals, such as parrots, macaws, monkeys, hamsters, or tortoises, you will need a Transit Guide for Animals (GTA), a health certificate, an updated vaccination card, and IBAMA authorization. They must also be transported in proper carriers, and it’s essential to confirm with the bus company whether they will travel in the luggage compartment. 🦜
As a general rule, companies don’t charge extra fees, but for added convenience, you can reserve a seat next to you if the company permits it.
